Contributions
Parents are asked to pay an annual contribution. The maximum is set as $60 in the School Regulations 2000. Our amount varies from year to year and is determined by the School Council during Term 4 each year. Parents are given written notification of all amounts requested and a breakdown of planned expenditure. Money collected is used to supplement school expenditure, typically to pay for whole school incursions and consumable art/craft materials.
The quality of our teaching and learning program will be maximised when each family makes its contribution to the cost of supplementing funding gained from other sources, including the State and Commonwealth Governments.
Charges
'Charges' is the term schools now use to refer to extra-cost optional components of the education programs. Examples of these extra cost optional components for which schools have historically collected payment for include activities such as:
- incursions/excursions (including school camps)
- in-term swimming lessons
- PEAC testing (Year 4's and other selected students only)
- choir (uniform hire, sheet music, transportation to activities, choral camp (Year 7's only). etc.)
- sporting events (eg. bus fare and / entry to venues such as interschool sporting events).
The School Council approves a list of expected charges and a detailed list is issued to parents in November of each year.
Personal Stationery Items
The school produces a list of personal stationery needs for each Year level and this is sent home to the parents during fourth term. The school shop helps to co-ordinate the purchase of materials which are available for collection by parents a few days before the commencement of the school year.
Families can purchase materials from other sources if they wish. However, please note that the prices on the booklists purchased through the school are competitive and the school receives a percentage of the overall sales.
All items should be clearly labelled with the child's name.
Religious Education
R.E. (Religious Education) classes are conducted weekly by visiting R.E. teachers.
Excursions and Incursions
From time to time teachers may organise educational excursions to enrich the educational program. Parents will be notified of such events and permission slips signed by a parent or guardian will be required to allow a child to attend.
The school also has incursions, or travelling performances, that come to the school to supplement the educational program and provide for a wide range of experiences. These are usually limited to one per term and may include cultural performances that have educational merit as well as being entertaining.
Houses
Children from Years 3 to 7 are placed in one of three houses - Dolphins (Blue), Sharks (Red) or Stingrays (Green). Each faction has a boy and girl captain and vice captain.
House competitions aim to encourage participation, sportsmanship, enjoyment, team spirit and endeavour. Allocation to a faction is done on admission. Every effort is done to ensure that children from a family are in the same faction.
House carnivals are held in athletics and swimming.
Lost Property
Parents please make sure that all clothing is clearly labelled with your child's name. Named articles can be returned to their owner. If items are lost, please check the lost property box in Room 4.
Items not claimed by a certain period will be cleaned and sold at the School Shop.
Parking
Increasingly, parents are driving their children to and from school each day. One result of this is that the front of schools become very hazardous before and after school.
Please be careful when moving off from the school after pick-up or set-down.
There are four entries to the school grounds including Cliverton Court, Radbourn Street, Telford Street and Hodge Court.
Please remember that the school staff carpark and the access way from Radbourn Street are not to be used as pick-up or set-down points for children.
School Records
Parents are asked to keep information on enrolment cards up to date. This information is very important and should be kept current in the event that we may need to contact you.
Any changes to telephone numbers, addresses and persons to contact in an emergency should be recorded on the information card at the school as soon as they occur. Please see the Registrar when updating information.
Swimming Lessons
All children in Years 1 - 7 are involved in In-Term swimming classes held during school time. Years 1 - 7 lessons are held at Craigie Leisure Centre. These classes are conducted through the Department of Education and Training. Parents will be advised through the School Newsletter of dates and times.
Bicycles, Skateboards and Scooters
The National Safety Council and Police Department recommend that a child be 10 years of age before being permitted to ride a bicycle to school. Under government legislation, all students riding bicycles to school need to wear a safety helmet. It is suggested that helmets be warn when using skateboards and scooters as well.
Once children are inside the school grounds, bicycles, skateboards and scooters must be walked to and from the bike racks and classrooms.
The bike racks are situated at the end of the access road from Radbourn Street, between the Library Resource Centre and the bottom oval and north of the undercover area beside Kelly's Corner.
Children bringing scooters to school are required to fold the scooter and place it under the seats outside classrooms.
Skateboards are to be left under seats outside the classrooms as well.
Homework
It is part of the school policy that students are given homework which is phased in gradually from Year 1. It can take various forms but is set to enhance the learning program of the school.
The key to a successful homework program is parent interest and support. Homework is an excellent opportunity for pupils to consolidate their skills with the help and encouragement of parents.
